Royce Lewis stars in Cedar Rapids debut

MLB.com - Sunday 13th August, 2017

Royce Lewis has passed every test the Twins have given him to begin his career, so it was only fitting that the 2017 No. 1 overall Draft pick turned in a milestone performance Saturday in his debut for Class A Cedar Rapids.

Lewis, Minnesota's No. 1 prospect (No. 31 overall), recorded a career-high four hits, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base to help the Kernels down Quad Cities, 9-1.

Starting at shortstop and batting leadoff, Lewis collected his four hits, all singles, in his first four trips to the plate.

He opened the first and third innings with knocks to left and right field, before extending Cedar Rapids' lead with a run-scoring hit in the fourth and tallying his third single to right two innings later.

Lewis, 18, would come up short in his bid for five hits, though, as he struck out swinging in his final at-bat to end the seventh inning.

Lewis was bumped straight to full-season ball after his impressive showing with the Twins' affiliate in the Rookie Gulf Coast League, where he homered in his first professional at-bat en route to slashing .271/.390/.414 with 11 extra-base hits, 15 steals and more walks (19) than strikeouts (17) in 36 games.

With his promotion to the Midwest League, Lewis became the first high school first-rounder to reach a full-season level.
